Rat (Jun-Jun)
Rat (Jun-Jun)
- Rat, whose real name is Jun-Jun, is an 11-year-old dumpsite boy.
- He lives in the worst part of Behala, sleeping in a wet hole filled with rats' nests, which is how he got his nickname.
- Unlike Raphael and Gardo, Rat has no family and isn't even part of the shanty town community.
"You wouldn't know Rat was there unless he wanted you to."
- Rat is street-smart, quick-witted, and resourceful. He has lived at the city's train station and only came to Behala when he heard about the Mission School.
- Though malnourished and filthy, Rat is incredibly clever, often outsmarting adults and staying one step ahead of danger.
"Rat could follow a trail better than a bloodhound."
- He trusts no one at first, but quickly forms a strong bond with Raphael and Gardo, becoming a loyal and essential part of their team.
- Rat hides the stolen bag, recognises the key is for a station locker, and helps the boys navigate the city.
"I know what that is. That's a locker key. Station."
- He saves their lives during several police raids, especially during a dramatic rooftop escape through the city's slums.
"When Rat says run, you don't wait."
- Rat also steals 23,000 pesos from the Mission School's safe to pay for Gabriel's Bible, knowing it's their only chance to decode José Angelico's message.
- In the end, it is Rat's idea to distribute the stolen money to the poor by scattering it over Behala. He fulfils José's wish and helps bring justice to the people.
"If we take it all, we're as bad as Zapanta."
- He escapes with Raphael, Gardo, and Pia Dante to Sampalo, where he finally gets what he always dreamed of: a boat, freedom, and a new life by the sea.
"I'll be Jun now. I'm done with being Rat."
