Key Signatures – Identifying a Major Key
infoNote
A key signature appears at the start of a piece, next to the treble clef or bass clef, and tells musicians which key the piece is in.
- Key signatures use sharps (#) or flats (♭) to modify certain notes.
- A key signature NEVER has both sharps and flats—only one or the other!
- The key signature is placed between the clef and the time signature on the staff. It must be included on every line of music.
📌 Examples:
- No sharps or flats → C Major
- 1 sharp (F♯) → G Major
- 2 sharps (F♯, C♯) → D Major
- 1 flat (B♭) → F Major
