What is a tissue?

Group of similar cells with similar function

Three main plant tissue types

Dermal, ground, and vascular

Dermal tissue function

Protects the surface of plants

Ground tissue functions

Food storage (roots/stems) or photosynthesis (leaves)

Vascular tissue function

Transports materials around the plant

Two types of vascular tissue

Xylem and phloem

Xylem transports

Water and minerals

Xylem movement direction

Always upwards

Phloem transports

Food (sugar and nutrients)

Phloem movement direction

Upwards or downwards

Dermal tissue adaptation

Thickened cell wall

Stomata

Openings for gas exchange

Dermal tissue transparency reason

Allows light to reach ground tissue for photosynthesis

Photosynthesis definition

Process: sunlight + CO2CO_2 + H2OH_2O → glucose + O2O_2
