Resting period with no growth & reduced cell activity or metabolism

Abscisic acid

Blocks water/oxygen from entering seed

Physically prevents embryo from emerging

Seeds lack regulators needed to stimulate germination

Increased light & higher temperatures in spring

Protects seedling from harsh winter conditions

Provides time for seed dispersal to new locations

Allows long growing season for seedlings after germination

Seeds remain in soil over time, increasing survival chances

Often over a year

Softens testa, allows water in, activates enzymes

Mimics winter, then warm simulates spring

Allows water & oxygen to enter through weakened testa
