Yeast (Leaving Cert Biology): Revision Notes
📚 Revision Notes
Yeast
- Yeast belongs to the fungi kingdom.
- It is eukaryotic and a unicellular fungus.
- Yeast is widely used in:
- Brewing industry: to produce beer.
- Baking industry: to produce bread.
- Yeast respires anaerobically.
infoNote
Anaerobic Respiration in Yeast Glucose → 2 Ethanol + 2 Carbon Dioxide
infoNote
Eukaryotic cells have a nucleus and membrane bound organelle e.g. animals, plants.
Asexual Reproduction: Budding
Yeast reproduces asexually by a process called budding:
- The nucleus divides by mitosis.
- One of the daughter nuclei moves into the bud.
- The bud may:
- Detach from the parent cell to form a new, independent yeast cell.
- Remain attached to the parent cell, forming another bud. This process can repeat, creating a colony
infoNote
Mitosis is a form of nuclear division in which one nucleus divides to form 2 nuclei, each with the same number of chromosomes as the parent nucleus.
