Conflict over Discrimination of Staff
infoNote
Discrimination is the unfair treatment of people based on characteristics like race, gender, or age. It leads to unequal opportunities and disadvantages in various areas such as work, education, and housing.
Employment Equality Acts 1998-2015
Discrimination in the workplace is prohibited under certain protected characteristics under this legislation. These characteristics are:
- Age
- Gender
- Race
- Religion
- Sexual Orientation
- Membership of the Travelling Community
- Disability
- Marital Status
- Family Status
It is illegal to treat an employee differently to another employee due to one of these protected characteristics. For example, employers may not deny an employee a bonus because they are younger than other employees.
