What is pH?

Measure of acidity/basicity based on H+H^+ concentration

Formula for pH

pH=−log⁡[H+]pH = -\log[H^+]

[H+][H^+] units in pH formula

moles per litre (mol/L)

Range of pH scale

0 to 14

pH of neutral solution

7

pH < 7 indicates

Acidic solution

pH > 7 indicates

Basic (alkaline) solution

How do strong acids behave in water?

Fully dissociate

Effect of strong acids on pH

Lower pH

What strong bases produce when dissociating

OH−OH^- ions (hydroxide ions)

Effect of strong bases on pH

Higher pH

pH meter advantage

Accurate, direct reading of pH

Universal indicator function

Changes colour based on pH

When is the pH scale applicable?

Only for dilute aqueous solutions

Classification of H2SO4H_2SO_4

Diprotic acid
