How do weak acids/bases dissociate?

Partially dissociate into ions in water

Equilibrium in weak acids

Lies towards undissociated acid

Example of common weak acid

Ethanoic acid CH3COOHCH_3COOH

Another weak acid example

Carbonic acid H2CO3H_2CO_3

Weak acid found in citrus fruits

Citric acid

Example of weak base

Ammonia NH3NH_3

Another weak base

Methylamine CH3NH2CH_3NH_2

Formula: [H+][H^+] in weak acids

[H+]=Ka×Ma[H^+] = \sqrt{K_a \times M_a}

Formula: [OH−][OH^-] in weak bases

[OH−]=Kb×Mb[OH^-] = \sqrt{K_b \times M_b}

What is KaK_a?

Acid dissociation constant

What is KbK_b?

Base dissociation constant

Calculate pH from [H+][H^+]

pH=−log⁡[H+]pH = -\log [H^+]

Calculate pOH from [OH−][OH^-]

pOH=−log⁡[OH−]pOH = -\log [OH^-]

Relationship: pH and pOH

pH+pOH=14pH + pOH = 14

Molar mass of ethanoic acid

60 g/mol
