Definition of like terms

Terms with the same variables raised to the same powers

Are 3x23x^2 and −2x2-2x^2 like terms?

Yes - like terms (same variable and power)

Are aa and bb like terms?

No - not like terms (different variables)

Are 33 and 66 like terms?

Yes - like terms (both constants)

Step 1 when adding algebraic expressions

Remove parentheses

Step 2 when adding algebraic expressions

Group like terms

Step 3 when adding algebraic expressions

Combine like terms

Step 1 when subtracting algebraic expressions

Remove parentheses and change signs

Effect of minus before () when removing brackets

All signs inside change

Simplify: (3x2+2x+1)+(5x2−x+4)(3x^2+2x+1)+(5x^2-x+4)

8x2+x+58x^2+x+5

Simplify: (4x2−3x+7)−(2x2+x−5)(4x^2-3x+7)-(2x^2+x-5)

2x2−4x+122x^2-4x+12

Simplify: (2x+3y−5)+(4x−y+2)(2x+3y-5)+(4x-y+2)

6x+2y−36x+2y-3
