Show

Algebraic expression definition

Math phrase with numbers, letters, operations (no equals sign)

Terms in an expression

Parts separated by plus or minus signs

Variables in algebra

Letters (xx, yy, zz) representing unknown values that change

Constants in algebra

Plain numbers whose values never change

Coefficients

Numbers that multiply the variables

Like terms definition

Terms with exactly same variables & exactly same powers

Golden rule for like terms

Only like terms may be added or subtracted

Simplifying expressions process

Collect & combine like terms: add/subtract coefficients

Expanding brackets

Multiply everything inside brackets by what's outside

Distributive property

a(b+c)=ab+aca(b + c) = ab + ac

Coefficient when no number shown (e.g., xx)

The coefficient is understood to be 11

Why 3x23x^2 and 3x3x are unlike terms
