Mathematical equation with = sign where variable appears to power of 1 only

Finding the value of the variable that makes the equation true

Whatever you do to one side, you must do exactly the same to the other

Use opposite operations to undo what's done to variable

Get variable by itself on one side

$a(b + c) = ab + ac$

Variable to power of 1 only

$180°$

$2x = 8$ or $x + 5 = 12$

$2x - 3 = 7$ (add then divide)

$5x + 2 = 3x - 4$ (variables on both sides)

Becomes $+3x$

$2x + 6$, not $2x + 3$

Verify solution makes original equation true
