Phototropism definition

Plant growth response to light from specific direction

Auxins

Plant hormones at growing tips controlling growth responses

Auxin distribution: overhead light

Distributed evenly, equal growth on all sides of stem

Auxin distribution: unilateral light

More accumulate on shaded side of stem

Mechanism: stem bending towards light

Shaded side has more auxins, grows faster, causes bending

Positive phototropism

Growth towards light, shown by stems

Negative phototropism

Growth away from light, shown by roots

Phototropism benefit: photosynthesis

Leaves positioned to receive maximum sunlight

Foil cap experiment result

Covered tip: straight growth; uncovered: bends to light

Plant part detecting light direction
