Practise the cards

10 cards from this deck

Show

Oxidation (in terms of electrons)

Loss of electrons

Reduction (in terms of electrons)

Gain of electrons

OILRIG mnemonic

Oxidation Is Loss, Reduction Is Gain (electrons)

Redox reactions

Oxidation & reduction always occur together

Oxidant (oxidising agent) role

Causes oxidation of another substance, is itself reduced

Reductant (reducing agent) role

Causes reduction of another, is itself oxidised

Half equations show

Oxidation & reduction separately with electrons (ee^-)

Oxidation number of element in its elemental state

Zero

Hydrogen oxidation number (usual)

+1+1 (except in metal hydrides like NaH where it's 1-1)

Oxygen oxidation number (usual)

2-2 (except in F2O\text{F}_2\text{O} & peroxides)
