Method to express very large/small numbers as powers of ten ($a \times 10^n$)

Scientific notation

$a \times 10^n$ where $a$ is between 1 and 10

Between 1 and 10

$5.89 \times 10^{10}$

$7.8 \times 10^{-6}$

Original number was smaller than 1

Move decimal point to the right

Move decimal point to the left

Decimal point moves one place per power of ten
