Replacing symbols in equations with numerical values, then calculating

$D = \frac{N(N - 1)}{\sum n(n - 1)}$

Total number of individual organisms in the survey

Number of individuals of each different species

Sum of (add together all the values that follow)

Always solve brackets first

$\text{mag} = \frac{\text{image size}}{\text{real size}}$

$\text{real size} = \frac{\text{image size}}{\text{mag}}$

Use consistent units before substituting values

Judge if answer is reasonable & identify potential errors
