Context	● For 70yrs + the People's Republic of China has been ruled by the Communist Party ● China's rulers are intolerant of any criticism mounted against them by their own citizens ● Despite opening up to economic globalisation, China still has a strong ideology. ↳ ∴ it is concerned about its population having access to foreign info and allowing 'free speech' ● Chinese citizens also have their online activity monitored and are given a citizenship rating based on it
Censorship in action	● In 1988, Chinese students demonstrated against communism in the Tiananmen Square: 100s of people are thought to have died in the army crackdown that followed ● Many Chinese people still do not know what happened that day, due to strict Censorship of the press and Internet ● Google withdrew its services from China in 2010 when the Chinese Government insisted
Social Media	● Facebook, Twitter and YT remain unavailable due to the 'Great Firewall of China', > 700 million Chinese citizens interacted with one another using local social media sites in 2019 using Youku Tudou (like YT). Sina Weibo (like Twitter) and Tencent QQ (like WhatsApp) and many others
N Korea	● In contrast, N Koreans have no access to the internet as a result of state controls
