Context	● The UN has been deeply involved w/ attempts to solve the conflict in the DRC ● Since 1999, around US$10 bn has been spent on the deployment of the UN peacekeeping troops ● Globally, it is the largest allocation of UN funds for conflict management there has ever been, by a considerable margin
MONUSCO	🔗 The UN Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, over 18,000 peacekeepers in 2017 have been sanction in DRC under Article 7 rules ↳ Means that they can fire weapons if it becomes necessary to do so + Has provided Congolese people w/ protection from rebel and Militia groups • It has left the country dependent on external support to guarantee political stability
Additional actions taken by the UN	● 2005 International Court of Justice ruling that Uganda must compensate DRC for the plundering of natural resources during the conflict that claimed over 5 mil lives ● The War crimes trials at The Hague of people involved in the conflict. In 2012, Thomas Lubanga, leader of the Union of Congolese patriots, was convicted if conscripting children aged u15 to kill ethnic Lendus during the conflict in DRC
