Ionic bonding

Metals & non-metals react, transfer electrons, form strong bonds

Cations

Positive ions formed when metal atoms lose electrons

Anions

Negative ions formed when non-metal atoms gain electrons

Ion formed when Na loses 1 electron

Na+Na^+ (sodium ion, positive charge)

Ion formed when Cl gains 1 electron

Cl−Cl^- (chloride ion, negative charge)

Ion formed when Mg loses 2 electrons

Mg2+Mg^{2+} (magnesium ion)

Ion formed when O gains 2 electrons

O2−O^{2-} (oxide ion)

Group 1 metals electron loss & ion charge

Lose 1 electron, form 1+ ions

Group 2 metals electron loss & ion charge

Lose 2 electrons, form 2+ ions

Group 7 non-metals electron gain & ion charge

Gain 1 electron, form 1- ions

Group 6 non-metals electron gain & ion charge

Gain 2 electrons, form 2- ions

What holds ions together?

Attraction between opposite charges

What structure do atoms aim for when forming ions?

Noble gas structure (full outer shell)

Octet rule

Atoms gain/lose/share electrons to get 8 in outer shell
