Show

What is equilibrium?

Balance point in reversible reactions in closed system

Why must equilibrium occur in a closed system?

No reactants or products can escape

Forward reaction

Reactants → products

Backward reaction

Products → reactants

Reaction rates at equilibrium

Rate of forward reaction = rate of backward reaction

Concentrations at equilibrium

Stay constant (don't change)

Position of equilibrium to the left

Mainly reactants present

Position of equilibrium to the right

Mainly products present

Rates vs amounts at equilibrium

Rates equal, amounts don't have to be equal

Dynamic equilibrium

Both reactions still happening at equilibrium

Equilibrium symbol ⇌ meaning

Reaction can go in both directions

Example equilibrium: H2H_2 and I2I_2 gases

H2(g)+I2(g)2HI(g)H_2(g) + I_2(g) ⇌ 2HI(g)
