The adult literacy rate indicates the proportion of adults who can read and write and is a useful measure as it reflects how many people have access to education, provided schools are available. Statistics show that only 43% of adults in Sierra Leone are literate, highlighting a lack of schools, which are a fundamental part of infrastructure. In contrast, 99% of adults in Italy can read and write, demonstrating higher development due to the presence of numerous schools. If adults are illiterate, it becomes challenging to secure well-paid jobs, ultimately lowering their quality of life.
