Show

What is a resultant force?

A single force that has the same effect as all other forces combined

Type of quantity that forces are

Vectors

Two features of forces as vectors

Size (in Newtons) and direction

Combining forces in the same direction

Add them together

Combining forces in opposite directions

Subtract the smaller from the larger

What zero resultant force means

Balanced forces

Effect of balanced forces on stationary object

Stays stationary

Effect of balanced forces on moving object

Keeps moving at same speed in same direction

What does a non-zero resultant force mean?

Unbalanced forces

What unbalanced forces cause

Acceleration (speed up, slow down, or change direction)

What objects need to change their motion

An unbalanced force

What does the direction of resultant force show?

The direction the object will accelerate
