The Merchant of Venice: Plot Summary

In The Merchant of Venice, a young man named Bassanio needs money to pursue Portia, a wealthy heiress. His friend Antonio, a merchant, borrows money from Shylock, a Jewish moneylender, to help Bassanio. The loan comes with a dangerous condition: if Antonio cannot repay it, Shylock can take a pound of Antonio's flesh.

Unfortunately, Antonio's ships are lost at sea, and he cannot repay the loan. Shylock demands his pound of flesh as agreed. However, Portia, disguised as a lawyer, intervenes. She argues that Shylock can take the flesh but cannot spill any blood, making it impossible for him to proceed. Shylock loses the case and is also forced to convert to Christianity. Although the play ends with the characters celebrating, it leaves the audience to think deeply about issues of justice, mercy, and prejudice.
