Paper 3 (Edexcel GCSE German): Revision Notes
Paper 3: Reading (2)
Overview of Paper 3 reading
Paper 3 focuses on two key skills: reading comprehension and translation. This paper tests your ability to understand German texts and translate from German into English. Understanding the structure and knowing effective strategies will help you maximise your marks.
Paper 3 is worth significant marks in your German exam - mastering these two core skills is essential for achieving your target grade.
Section A: Reading comprehension
What to expect
Section A presents you with German texts on various topics such as festivals, holidays, and cultural events. You'll need to demonstrate your understanding through different question types including:
- Multiple choice questions with tick boxes
- Sentence completion tasks
- Short answer questions
The questions follow the order of the text, which means the answer to the first question appears early in the passage, whilst later questions relate to information found towards the end.
This sequential structure is your advantage - you don't need to search the entire text for each answer. Work systematically from beginning to end.

| das Festival | festival |
| das Feuerwerk | fireworks |

Reading comprehension strategies
Look for cognates - these are German words that look similar to English words and often mean the same thing. Examples include Festival, Touristen, and Aktivitäten.
Use context clues when you encounter unfamiliar words. The surrounding sentences often provide hints about meaning. Images accompanying the text can also help you understand the content.
Read questions before the text to know what information you're looking for. This helps you focus on relevant details whilst reading.
Check your answers make sense by re-reading the relevant section of text. Your selected answer should logically fit with the information provided.

At Foundation level: You'll translate five separate sentences worth 10 marks total.
At Higher level: You'll translate a paragraph worth 10 marks.
Foundation level gives you individual sentences to work with, while Higher level requires you to maintain flow and coherence across a longer text passage.
Essential translation vocabulary
| German | English |
|---|---|
| der Abenteuerurlaub | adventure holiday |
| der Familienurlaub | family holiday |
| die Schulferien | school holidays |
| besuchen | to visit |
| möchte | would like |
| während | during |
| letztes Jahr | last year |
| nächstes Jahr | next year |
| idealer Ort | ideal place |
Example sentences in context:
- Ich möchte Afrika besuchen. (I would like to visit Africa.)
- Nächstes Jahr werde ich in England bleiben. (Next year I will stay in England.)
Translation strategies
Consider each word carefully but remember that not every German word has a direct English equivalent. Focus on conveying the overall meaning accurately rather than word-for-word translation.
Read the whole sentence first to understand the complete meaning before attempting your translation. This helps you choose appropriate English expressions.
Transfer meaning appropriately - some phrases need to be adapted to sound natural in English. For example, "mit meiner Schwester" becomes "with my sister" rather than a literal translation.
Check your work makes sense by reading your English translation aloud. It should sound natural and grammatically correct.
Don't panic about unknown words - use context clues and your knowledge of similar German words to work out meanings that fit logically.
