Shops and shopping (Edexcel GCSE German): Revision Notes
Shops and shopping
Essential shopping vocabulary
Understanding key shopping terminology is crucial for discussing your shopping experiences and describing different types of shops and shopping locations.
| German | English |
|---|---|
| einkaufen gehen | to go shopping |
| das Dach (nt) | roof |
| das Einkaufszentrum (nt) | shopping centre |
| das Geschäft (nt) | shop |
| der Laden (m) | shop |
| entfernt | away, distant |
| kaufen | to buy |
| einkaufen | to shop |
The vocabulary above forms the foundation of shopping conversations. Notice how das Geschäft and der Laden both mean "shop" but have different genders - this is typical in German where multiple words can express the same concept.
Example sentences in context
Worked Example: Using shopping vocabulary in sentences
- Ich gehe heute einkaufen, weil ich neue Kleidung brauche. (I'm going shopping today because I need new clothes.)
- Das Einkaufszentrum ist nicht weit entfernt von meinem Haus. (The shopping centre isn't far away from my house.)
- In diesem Geschäft kann man alles kaufen. (You can buy everything in this shop.)
Notice how the German sentence structure places the verb in the second position and uses weil (because) to introduce dependent clauses.
Grammar: Shopping in different time frames
When discussing shopping experiences, you'll need to use various tenses to talk about past, present, and future shopping activities. Here's how to express shopping scenarios across different time frames:
Present tense
Use the present tense to describe current shopping activities or habits.
Worked Example: Present tense
Heute kaufe ich Blumen, weil meine Mutter Geburtstag hat. (I'm buying flowers today because it's my mother's birthday.)
Breaking it down:
- kaufe = first person singular present of "kaufen"
- weil introduces a subordinate clause
- The verb hat goes to the end in the subordinate clause
Perfect tense
The perfect tense describes completed shopping actions in the past.
Worked Example: Perfect tense
Ich habe letzten Monat einen neuen Laptop gekauft, weil mein alter Laptop kaputt war. (I bought a new laptop last month because my old one was broken.)
Structure: haben/sein + past participle
- habe (auxiliary verb) + gekauft (past participle of kaufen)
Imperfect tense
Important exam tip: At Foundation tier, you only need the imperfect for sein and haben – ich war, ich hatte, etc.
Worked Example: Imperfect tense
Als ich ein Kind war, kaufte ich immer Schokolade. (When I was a child, I was always buying chocolate.)
Note: war is the imperfect form of sein (to be)
Future tense
Express future shopping plans using werden + infinitive.
Worked Example: Future tense
Nächste Woche werde ich mit meiner Freundin einkaufen gehen, um Geschenke zu kaufen. (Next week I'm going to go shopping with my friend to buy presents.)
Structure: werden + infinitive
- werde (conjugated werden) + gehen (infinitive)
- um zu = "in order to"
Conditional mood
Use the conditional to express hypothetical shopping scenarios.
Worked Example: Conditional mood
Wenn ich das Geld hätte, würde ich gern ein neues Handy haben, aber ich muss dafür sparen. (If I had the money, I would like to have a new phone, but I have to save for that.)
Structure: würde + infinitive for the conditional
- hätte = conditional form of "haben"
- würde + haben = conditional construction
Describing shopping centres
When describing shopping facilities, focus on key features and amenities that shoppers might find useful.
Shopping centre features vocabulary
| German | English |
|---|---|
| das Einkaufszentrum | shopping centre |
| die Geschäfte | shops |
| die Restaurants | restaurants |
| der Parkplatz | car park |
| die Öffnungszeiten | opening hours |
| bis | until |
| geöffnet | open |
When describing shopping centres, pay attention to opening hours (Öffnungszeiten) as they're commonly tested in listening exercises. German shops often have different hours compared to other countries.

In meiner Freizeit besuche ich gerne das Einkaufszentrum. Es ist nicht weit entfernt und hat meine Lieblingsläden und ein riesiges Dach aus Glas. (I like to visit the shopping centre in my free time. It's not far away and has my favourite shops and a huge roof made of glass.)

Exam practice: Listening comprehension
In listening exercises, you'll often hear descriptions of shopping centres and their facilities. Listen carefully for specific details about:
- Number of shops and restaurants
- Special features (car parks, opening hours)
- Types of shops available
- Facilities and amenities
Common exam trap: Shopping centre adverts often mention specific numbers and times. Practice listening for numbers in German, especially opening hours (e.g., "von 9 bis 21 Uhr" = "from 9 to 9 pm").
Common items mentioned in shopping centre adverts include clothing shops, sports equipment, perfume, electrical appliances, children's toys, and books. Familiarise yourself with these vocabulary areas.
Remember!
Key Points to Remember:
- Master the key shopping vocabulary - focus on common shops and shopping activities you can relate to your own experiences
- Use different tenses confidently - practice describing past shopping trips (perfect tense), current shopping habits (present tense), and future shopping plans (future tense)
- At Foundation tier, only learn imperfect forms of sein and haben - ich war (I was), ich hatte (I had)
- Listen for specific details in exam tasks - shopping centre descriptions often include numbers of shops, opening hours, and available facilities
- Practice translation in both directions - this helps reinforce vocabulary and sentence structures for the speaking and writing exams
