Reading (1) (Edexcel GCSE Spanish): Revision Notes
Paper 3: Reading
Overview of the reading paper
Paper 3 is your Spanish reading examination, testing your comprehension skills and ability to translate from Spanish into English. Understanding the structure will help you manage your time effectively during the exam.
Paper structure:
- Section A: Reading comprehension questions
- Section B: Translation from Spanish into English
- Timing: Foundation - 45 minutes, Higher - 1 hour
- Total marks: 50 marks (including 10 marks for translation)
- Exam weighting: 25% of your total GCSE grade
The paper contains 8-9 questions in Section A, with some questions split into multiple parts. Section B requires you to translate 35 words in 6 sentences (Foundation) or a 50-word paragraph (Higher).
Question types and format
The reading paper uses the same question types as the listening paper. You'll encounter multiple-choice questions where you must select the correct answer and place an X in the appropriate column.
Key features of the questions:
- All titles, instructions, questions and answers are written in English
- Photos may appear but won't give direct clues to answers
- They help you understand the context of the text
- There's a gradual increase in difficulty throughout the paper
- Longer texts appear towards the end
- The number of marks indicates how much detail to include in your answer
Useful vocabulary for reading comprehension
| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| la tienda | the shop |
| cerrada | closed |
| el mercado | the market |
| la camiseta | the t-shirt |
| la piscina | the swimming pool |
| el campo | the countryside |
| la fruta | the fruit |
| el fútbol | football |
| el parque | the park |
| el recreo | break time |
Example sentences using these terms:
- Voy a la piscina esta tarde (I'm going to the swimming pool this afternoon)
- La tienda de ropa estaba cerrada (The clothes shop was closed)
- Comí mucha fruta durante el recreo (I ate lots of fruit during break time)
Essential reading skills
The reading exam tests two main types of skills that you need to develop:
Recall skills
Recall questions test your ability to identify and understand individual words, then link them to the exact English equivalent in the question. You don't need to understand the entire sentence - just key vocabulary.
Example: If you see "Voy a la piscina esta tarde" and the question asks "Where is Hugo going?", you only need to recognise that piscina means swimming pool to select the correct answer.
Process skills
Process questions require you to understand more of the text to reach the correct answer. You need to work out relationships between different parts of the sentence or text.
Example: "La tienda de ropa estaba cerrada, pero encontré una camiseta ideal en el mercado" (The clothes shop was closed, but I found an ideal t-shirt at the market). To answer "Where did Sara buy her new t-shirt?", you must understand both parts of the sentence to work out that she went to the market because the clothes shop was closed.
Translation practice
Translation Practice Examples:
Spanish to English:
- Jugué al fútbol en el parque → I played football in the park
- Fui a pasear en el campo → I went for a walk in the countryside
English to Spanish:
- I drank plenty of water → Bebí mucha agua
- Today I ate fruit during break → Hoy comí fruta durante el recreo
Exam technique tips
Important strategies for success:
Look for cognates - words that look similar to English (like fruta and fruit). Some words from outside the prescribed vocabulary list may appear if they're immediately recognisable.
- Names of people are taken from the specification and prescribed lists
- Place names and proper nouns may be glossed with an asterisk
- Read the English questions carefully before looking at the Spanish text
- In multiple-choice questions, the answers appear in the same order as the information in the text
- Use process of elimination for difficult questions
- Don't panic if you don't understand every word - focus on the key information needed

Key Points to Remember:
- Time management is crucial - don't spend too long on difficult questions
- Recall questions need vocabulary recognition, process questions need full text understanding
- Look for cognates and words similar to English to help with unfamiliar vocabulary
- Read English questions first to know what information you're looking for
- Multiple-choice answers follow the same order as information appears in the Spanish text
