Using vocabulary in context
The key to mastering vocabulary is seeing how words work together in realistic sentences. Notice how these phrases combine different vocabulary items to create natural-sounding Spanish.
Context Examples: Classroom Activities
- En la clase de ciencias, trabajamos en grupos para resolver problemas. (In science class, we work in groups to solve problems.)
- Mi profesor nos ayuda si tenemos un problema. (Our teacher helps us if we have a problem.)
- Hacemos muchas actividades interesantes. (We do many interesting activities.)
- Usamos los ordenadores para buscar información. (We use computers to look for information.)
Possessive pronouns
Possessive pronouns replace nouns to show ownership. In English, these are words like 'mine', 'yours', 'his', 'hers', 'ours' and 'theirs'. In Spanish, these pronouns follow specific patterns and must agree with the noun they replace.
Formation table
| Singular | Plural | |||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Masculine | Feminine | Masculine | Feminine | |
| mine | el mío | la mía | los míos | las mías |
| yours | el tuyo | la tuya | los tuyos | las tuyas |
| his/hers | el suyo | la suya | los suyos | las suyas |
| ours | el nuestro | la nuestra | los nuestros | las nuestras |
| yours | el vuestro | la vuestra | los vuestros | las vuestras |
| theirs | el suyo | la suya | los suyos | las suyas |
Key grammar rule
Critical Agreement Rule: Possessive pronouns agree with the noun they replace, not with the person who owns the item. This is a common mistake area in GCSE Spanish exams.
Worked Example: Possessive Pronoun Agreement
-
Tengo mis libros. ¿Dónde están los tuyos? (I have my books. Where are yours?)
- "Libros" is masculine plural, so we use "los tuyos" (masculine plural)
-
¿De quién son estos libros? Son míos. (Whose books are these? They are mine.)
- "Libros" is masculine plural, so we use "míos" (masculine plural)
Using possessive pronouns after "ser"
After the verb ser (to be), you have a special option that can make your Spanish sound more natural:
Helpful Grammar Tip: After the verb ser (to be), you can leave out the article to make your speech flow better:
- ¿De quién son estos libros? Son míos. (Whose are these books? They are mine.)
Describing activities as fun
To say an activity is good fun, use the adjective divertido. This is a very useful adjective for describing your school experience positively.
- Las clases son muy divertidas. (The classes are very fun.)
- Hacemos actividades divertidas. (We do fun activities.)
Agreement Reminder: Remember that divertido is an adjective, so it must agree with the noun it describes. Notice how it changes to "divertidas" when describing feminine plural nouns like "clases" and "actividades".
