What is the main purpose of measures of dispersion?

To understand how spread out data values are.

What are the two main measures of dispersion for discrete data?

Range and interquartile range (IQR).

How does the range measure data spread?

Largest value minus smallest value.

How is the interquartile range (IQR) calculated?

Q₃ minus Q₁, the spread of middle 50%.

What do quartiles divide the data into?

Four equal parts or quarters.
