📚 Revision Notes
8.2.1 Test for Hydrogen
infoNote
Hydrogen is a flammable gas commonly produced in reactions between metals and acids. It can be easily identified using the squeaky pop test.
infoNote
How to Test for Hydrogen:
- Collect the Gas:
- During a reaction that produces hydrogen gas, collect the gas in a test tube.
- Perform the Squeaky Pop Test:
- Light a splint (a thin piece of wood, like a matchstick) and carefully hold it at the mouth of the test tube containing the gas.
- Observe the Result:
- If hydrogen is present, you will hear a squeaky pop sound. This sound is caused by the hydrogen gas reacting quickly with the oxygen in the air, producing a small explosion.
