My Mother Said I Never Should: Plot Summary
My Mother Said I Never Should follows four generations of women—Doris, Margaret, Jackie, and Rosie—who struggle with the societal expectations, and family secrets. The play moves back and forth in time, revealing how the choices of one generation affect the next. Central to the story is Jackie, who, as a young woman, has a daughter, Rosie, out of wedlock. To avoid scandal, Jackie's mother, Margaret, raises Rosie as her own child, leading Rosie to believe Jackie is her sister. As Rosie grows up, the truth about her parentage eventually comes out, causing emotional turmoil.
The play explores themes of identity, the changing role of women in society, and the sacrifices mothers make for their children. It shows how, despite their differences, the women are bound together by their shared experiences and the love they have for one another.
