What is the motor effect?

When a wire carrying current experiences a force in a magnetic field

What does a current-carrying wire produce?

Its own magnetic field

What happens when a current-carrying wire is placed between magnet poles?

The two magnetic fields interact

What results from interacting magnetic fields on a wire?

A force on the wire

Direction of force in motor effect

At 90°90° (right angle) to both current direction and magnetic field

Angle for maximum force in motor effect

90°90° to the magnetic field

Force when wire not at 90°90° to field

Less force

Force when wire parallel to magnetic field

No force

What 2 things are needed to find force direction?

Direction of magnetic field and direction of current

What does the force do to the wire in motor effect?

Pushes it out of the field
