Lactose Intolerance
Overview:
- Lactose is a natural sugar found in milk and milk products.
- Lactose intolerance occurs when a person does not produce enough of the enzyme lactase, which is needed to digest lactose.
- If lactose is consumed:
- The undigested lactose molecules remain in the digestive system.
- This causes symptoms such as cramps and diarrhoea.
Dietary Management:
- Avoid lactose-containing foods:
- Milk
- Cheese
- Other dairy products
- Choose lactose-free alternatives:
- Lactose-free milk
- Plant-based milk, such as almond, soy, or oat milk
- Calcium supplementation:
- Many people with lactose intolerance take calcium supplements to ensure they get enough calcium for strong bones and teeth.
