Dotted Notes (Junior Cert Music): Revision Notes
📚 Revision Notes
Dotted Notes
- A dot increases a note's length by adding half of its original value.
- This makes the note longer than normal. | Note | Without Dot | With Dot | |---|---|---| | Semibreve (𝅝) | 4 beats | 6 beats | | Minim (𝅗𝅥) | 2 beats | 3 beats | | Crotchet (𝅗𝅥) | 1 beat | 1.5 beats | | Quaver (𝅘𝅥𝅮) | ½ beat | ¾ beat |
Dotted Rhythms in Songs
- Dotted rhythms are common in national anthems and marches.
- Examples:
- 🎵 Amhrán na bhFiann (Ireland's National Anthem).
- 🎵 Fratelli d'Italia (Italy's National Anthem).
- Example of a Dotted Quaver:
- A dotted quaver (𝅘𝅥𝅮.) lasts for ¾ of a beat. This is because a quaver (𝅘𝅥𝅮) is ½ a beat, and the dot adds an extra ¼ beat.
- (½ beat + ¼ beat)
infoNote
A dot placed after a note adds on half the value of the original note, making the note last half as long again. The dot on its own has no value. It takes its value from the note it's placed after.
