Understanding noun gender patterns
Spanish has helpful patterns that make it easier to know whether nouns are masculine or feminine. This is particularly useful when talking about school activities.
Critical Gender Patterns
Memorising these patterns will help you use the correct articles and adjectives automatically when speaking about activities and school subjects.
Nouns ending in -dad
All nouns ending in -dad are feminine:
- la personalidad (personality)
- la universidad (university)
- la realidad (reality)
- la sociedad (society)
Nouns ending in -ión
Nearly all nouns ending in -ión are feminine:
- la situación (situation)
- la información (information)
- la educación (education)
- la televisión (television)
Exception: The word avión (plane) is masculine: el avión.
Worked Example: Using Gender Patterns
Step 1: Identify the ending
- "educación" ends in -ión → feminine
- "personalidad" ends in -dad → feminine
Step 2: Apply the correct article
- ✅ la educación (education)
- ✅ la personalidad (personality)
Step 3: Make adjectives agree
- La educación es importante. (Education is important.)
- La personalidad del profesor es muy divertida. (The teacher's personality is very fun.)
Knowing these patterns helps you use the correct articles (la/una) and adjectives when talking about school subjects and activities.
Essential irregular verbs: poder and hacer
These two irregular verbs are crucial for talking about what you can do and what you do in clubs and activities.
Why These Verbs Matter
Poder and hacer are among the most frequently used verbs in Spanish. Mastering their conjugations is essential for expressing abilities and describing activities.
Poder (to be able to/can)
Poder is a stem-changing verb where 'o' changes to 'ue' in most forms:
| Person | Spanish | English |
|---|---|---|
| yo | puedo | I can |
| tú | puedes | you can |
| él/ella | puede | he/she can |
| nosotros/nosotras | podemos | we can |
| vosotros/vosotras | podéis | you can (plural) |
| ellos/ellas | pueden | they can |
Hacer (to make/do)
Hacer is only irregular in the first person singular (yo):
| Person | Spanish | English |
|---|---|---|
| yo | hago | I make/do |
| tú | haces | you make/do |
| él/ella | hace | he/she makes/does |
| nosotros/nosotras | hacemos | we make/do |
| vosotros/vosotras | hacéis | you make/do (plural) |
| ellos/ellas | hacen | they make/do |
Worked Example: Using Poder and Hacer
With poder:
- Puedo bailar salsa muy bien. (I can dance salsa very well.)
- ¿Puedes cantar en el coro? (Can you sing in the choir?)
With hacer:
- Hago ejercicio tres veces por semana. (I do exercise three times a week.)
- Hacemos los deberes después del club. (We do homework after the club.)
- No pueden ir al colegio mañana. (They can't go to school tomorrow.)
Poder is often followed by an infinitive verb (puedo bailar, puedes cantar), while hacer can be used on its own or with specific activities.
