What is cytokinesis?

Final stage of cell division; cytoplasm divides into 2 cells

When cytokinesis occurs

Immediately after mitosis is complete

Genetic material received by daughter cells

Same number of identical chromosomes as parent cell

Cellular components received by daughter cells

Approximately half of organelles and biomolecules

Cytokinesis method in animal cells

Cleavage (using a cleavage furrow)

What is a cleavage furrow

Shallow groove that forms around the cell's surface

Where cleavage furrow forms

At position of cell's equator during metaphase

Why plant cells can't form cleavage furrow

Rigid cell walls prevent it

What vesicles contain in plant cytokinesis

Cellulose (materials for new cell walls)

What structure do vesicles form in plant cytokinesis

Cell plate

How cell plate functions

Grows outward, forms new cell walls on both sides

Animal cell cytokinesis mechanism

Cleavage furrow pinches cell membrane inward

Plant cell cytokinesis mechanism

Cell plate builds from centre outward

Difference: mitosis vs cytokinesis

Mitosis: chromosome separation; cytokinesis: cell division

Timing of mitosis and cytokinesis

Sequential; cytokinesis begins as mitosis completes
