Show

What are coefficients in a function?

Numerical values in function equations (like aa, bb, cc)

What does finding unknown coefficients mean?

Determining values when given points on the function's graph

Key principle if point (x,y)(x,y) lies on function

Substituting coordinates gives a true mathematical statement

General form of a linear function

f(x)=ax+bf(x) = ax + b

Info needed to find linear function unknowns

Two pieces of information (usually 2 coordinate points)

General form of a quadratic function

f(x)=ax2+bx+cf(x) = ax^2 + bx + c

Shape created by quadratic functions

A parabola (smooth U-shaped curve)

Info needed to find quadratic unknowns

Three pieces of information (e.g., 3 coordinate points)

First step when finding unknown coefficients

Identify the function type (linear or quadratic)

Method used to solve for unknown coefficients

Solve equations simultaneously using elimination or substitution

Critical exam tip for substituting

Put xx-value and yy-value in the correct positions

How to verify your final function

Check intercepts or substitute back to verify
