Formal Letter (Leaving Cert Spanish): Revision Notes
Formal letter
What is a formal letter?
A formal letter in Spanish is a structured piece of writing used for official communication such as complaints, requests for information, or responses to published articles. In the Leaving Certificate Higher Level exam, you can choose to write either a formal letter or translate a dialogue. This task is worth 30 marks total, with each of the five required points earning 6 marks.
The formal letter is one of two writing options in the Higher Level Spanish exam. Students often choose this over dialogue translation because it allows more creative expression while following a clear structure.
The key to success lies in developing each point thoroughly - one or two sentences per point will not earn full marks. You must expand and elaborate on each idea whilst maintaining formal register throughout, using "usted" instead of "tú".
Critical Exam Point: Each of your five points must be developed into a full paragraph to achieve maximum marks. Brief, underdeveloped responses will result in significant mark deductions.
Guidelines for writing
Structure and layout
Your formal letter should follow this precise layout:
Top left corner: Write the recipient's address
- Name of person/organisation
- Street address
- City and postal code
- Country (if applicable)
Top right corner: Write your own address and the full date
- Your name
- Your street address
- Your city
- Full date including year (e.g., "Dublin, 15 de octubre de 2021")
Opening: Start with the appropriate formal greeting based on whether you know the recipient's name
Body: Develop five distinct points in separate paragraphs
Closing: End with a formal closing phrase and your signature
Tone and register
Maintain formal register throughout by using "usted" forms consistently. Your language should be respectful, clear, and professional. Avoid contractions or overly casual expressions.
Register Consistency: Never mix formal "usted" with informal "tú" forms anywhere in your letter. This is one of the most common mistakes that can significantly impact your marks.
Phrase bank
Using the Phrase Bank Effectively: Memorise several phrases from each category to ensure you can write fluently during the exam. Having these expressions ready will help you focus on developing your content rather than struggling with basic structures.

Sample Letter 1: Response to newspaper article about social media
Señor M. López El País C/ San Fermín 32 Madrid 28014 España
Louise Foxe 21 Castle Road Donaghmede Dublin 13
Louise
Dear Mr. López,
I am writing this letter in relation to the article published in El País on the 13th of October. I agree that there are negative effects associated with the use of social media; however, I want to highlight the great number of benefits that it also brings us.
Firstly, it cannot be denied that social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat or WhatsApp have revolutionised the way we communicate. Today we can be in contact with relatives and friends in distant countries without leaving the sofa. Instant messaging gives us the opportunity to share photos, videos and information of any kind with just a click of the mouse.
Another benefit is found in the field of education. Social media helps students to share notes, ideas and information, to ask questions to their teachers and to talk about what they are studying. My history teacher has her own blog where we can find information and chat with her, and my classmates from the biology class have a WhatsApp group to share notes, and my school uses instant messaging to inform us about practical matters such as closures due to snow or exam dates.
Your article talked about people who spend hours glued to a screen. The internet is so important in our lives that I could not imagine living without it. I use it every day to listen to music, watch films or chat with my friends. I go online to relax and to forget about exam stress, so it is important for my mental health. I love being connected with my friends.
The other side of the coin is that it can bring many cyberbullying problems. I have just said that social media plays an important role for my mental health, but for many young people it is a source of stress and low self-esteem. The problem is that there is little control over most social media, and people can say what they want hidden behind the screen.
Most parents have no idea what their children are doing online. It is difficult to monitor internet use and know what their children are watching. It is the parents' responsibility to protect their children. They should block sites with inappropriate content and teach them that the virtual world has its dangers.
Many young people use social media responsibly. They know the dangers and, for that reason, do not put personal data online. Young people of my generation are growing up in the digital age and we understand that much of what we read on the internet is not real. In my opinion, the benefits of the internet outweigh the dangers.
I hope you can appreciate my point of view. Thank you in advance for your attention.
Yours sincerely, Louise
Sample Letter 2: Complaint letter about hotel service
Director del Hotel Hotel Maravilla Avenida del Sol 45 Valencia 46001 España
Sarah Murphy 15 Oak Street Cork Ireland
Sarah Murphy
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to lodge a complaint about the service I received during my stay at your hotel from 15 to 18 July.
Firstly, when I arrived at your establishment, my room was not ready despite having booked three months in advance. I had to wait two hours at reception with my luggage, which was very uncomfortable after a long journey.
Furthermore, the room I was eventually given did not correspond to what I had booked. I had requested a room with a sea view, but I was given one overlooking the car park. The noise from the cars prevented me from sleeping well throughout my stay.
In addition, the cleaning service left much to be desired. The towels were not changed during the three days, and the room was not cleaned properly. I found hair in the sink, and the bed was not well made.
I must also mention that the restaurant staff were very discourteous. During breakfast, the waiters seemed annoyed when I asked them for something, and they took a long time to serve the food.
Finally, when I tried to use the swimming pool, I discovered it was closed for maintenance — information that I was not told about when making the booking.
I would be very grateful if you could offer me an explanation for these inconveniences and appropriate compensation for the trouble caused.
I look forwards to hearing from you soon.
Yours faithfully, Sarah Murphy
Common mistakes and tips
Understanding common pitfalls and following proven strategies will significantly improve your formal letter writing performance.
Frequent errors to avoid:
Register confusion: Never mix formal "usted" with informal "tú" forms. Check all your verb endings and possessive adjectives to ensure consistency throughout your entire letter.
Layout mistakes: Don't forget to include both addresses and the full date. Place them in the correct positions as shown in the samples - this is part of the formal letter format and marks will be deducted for incorrect placement.
Insufficient development: Each point must be expanded into a full paragraph. One sentence per point will lose marks significantly - aim for at least 3-4 sentences per point to demonstrate thorough development.
Incorrect closings: Match your closing to your opening - use "Le saluda atentamente" when you know the person's name, "Se despide cordialmente" when using "Muy señor mío". This shows attention to formal correspondence conventions.
Success tips:
Plan your five points before you start writing. Make sure each addresses the task requirements clearly and that you can develop each one substantially.
Use connecting words like "además" (furthermore), "por otra parte" (on the other hand), "finalmente" (finally) to link your ideas smoothly and create better flow between paragraphs.
Check your accents carefully - missing accents in formal writing look particularly unprofessional and can affect your overall impression marks.
Practice the layout until it becomes automatic - you don't want to waste valuable exam time figuring out where addresses and dates should be positioned.
Key Points to Remember:
- Formal letters require "usted" forms throughout - never slip into informal "tú"
- Each of your five points must be developed into a substantial paragraph for full marks
- Follow the exact layout shown: recipient's address (left), your address and date (right)
- Use appropriate formal phrases from the phrase bank to sound professional
- End with the correct formal closing and your signature
