Linear inequality

Like linear equation but uses inequality symbols, power = 1

Equations vs inequalities: type of solution

Equations: single point; Inequalities: solution set (range)

Rule when multiplying/dividing by negative number

Reverse the direction of the inequality sign

Filled/closed dot on number line means

Value is included in solution (≤ or ≥)

Open/hollow circle on number line means

Value is NOT included in solution (< or >)

Round brackets ( ) in interval notation

Endpoint is NOT included

Square brackets [ ] in interval notation

Endpoint IS included

Brackets with infinity symbols (∞ or -∞)

Always use round brackets

Solve −r>−4-r > -4 for rr

r<4r < 4 (multiply by -1, flip sign)

Most common error with linear inequalities

Forgetting to flip sign when multiplying/dividing by negative
