10 cards from this deck

Show

Exponential notation purpose

Shorthand for repeated multiplication

Zero exponent rule

a0=1a^0 = 1 for any non-zero aa

Negative exponent rule

a−n=1ana^{-n} = \frac{1}{a^n}

Product law (same base)

am×an=am+na^m \times a^n = a^{m+n} (add exponents)

Quotient law (same base)

aman=am−n\frac{a^m}{a^n} = a^{m-n} (subtract exponents)

Power of a power law

(am)n=amn(a^m)^n = a^{mn} (multiply exponents)

Power of a product law

(ab)n=an×bn(ab)^n = a^n \times b^n

Power of a quotient law

(ab)n=anbn\left(\frac{a}{b}\right)^n = \frac{a^n}{b^n}

When to use prime factorisation

When fractions have different bases

Common mistake with different bases

Don't add exponents: 23×32≠652^3 \times 3^2 \neq 6^5
