What are vector components?

Parts of a vector in horizontal and vertical directions

Formula for horizontal component

Rx=Rcos⁡(θ)R_x = R \cos(\theta)

Formula for vertical component

Ry=Rsin⁡(θ)R_y = R \sin(\theta)

Process of breaking vector into components

Resolving into components

Direction angle θ\theta is measured from

Counter-clockwise from positive x-axis

How to add vectors using components

Add all x-components, then add all y-components separately

Formula for resultant magnitude

R=Rx2+Ry2R = \sqrt{R_x^2 + R_y^2}

Formula for resultant direction angle

θ=tan⁡−1(RyRx)\theta = \tan^{-1}(\frac{R_y}{R_x})

Component signs in second quadrant

x-component negative, y-component positive

Component signs in third quadrant

Both components negative
