Show

Distance (type of quantity)

Scalar quantity measuring total path length travelled

Displacement (type of quantity)

Vector with magnitude & direction from start to finish position

Key difference: distance vs displacement

Distance depends on path taken; displacement only on start/end points

Displacement vector formula

s=dfdi\vec{s} = \vec{d_f} - \vec{d_i}

Position vector vs displacement

Position measured from origin; displacement can start anywhere

Head-to-tail method for vectors

Draw 1st vector, place tail of 2nd at head of 1st, draw resultant

Parallelogram rule for vectors

Draw both vectors from same point; resultant is diagonal

How to subtract vectors

Add the negative: AB=A+(B)\vec{A} - \vec{B} = \vec{A} + (-\vec{B})

Magnitude of resultant vector formula

s=sx2+sy2s = \sqrt{s_x^2 + s_y^2} (Pythagoras' theorem)

Direction of resultant vector formula

tanθ=sysx\tan\theta = \frac{s_y}{s_x}
