Technique to simplify calculations using linear transformation

$y = \frac{x - a}{b}$

Constant to shift data (often the mean)

Constant to scale data (often range or standard value)

$\bar{x} = b\bar{y} + a$

$\text{Var}(x) = b^2 \times \text{Var}(y)$

$\text{SD}(x) = b \times \text{SD}(y)$

No change to shape or relative positions of data

Simplifies complex numbers, making calculations less error-prone

Only $b$ (scaling factor), not $a$
