What is addiction?

Compulsive substance use/behaviour despite causing harm

When addiction recognised in DSM-5

Three core components of addiction

Physical dependence, psychological dependence, tolerance

Physical dependence

Body adapts to drug use, creating biological need for substance

Psychological dependence

Mental compulsion to continue using due to rewarding effects

Tolerance in addiction

Response diminishes over time, requiring larger doses for same effect

Cross-tolerance

Tolerance to one drug reduces sensitivity to similar substances

Withdrawal syndrome

Physical/psychological symptoms when stopping/reducing substance

Key feature of withdrawal symptoms

Typically opposite of the effects produced by the drug itself

How withdrawal drives continued use

Taking drug avoids unpleasant withdrawal effects
