They shift the graph without changing its shape or orientation.

Use $f(x - a)$ to shift the graph right by $a$ units.

Use $f(x + a)$ to shift the graph left by $a$ units.

Use $f(x) + b$ to shift the graph up by $b$ units.

Use $f(x) - b$ to shift the graph down by $b$ units.

It shifts $\sin(x)$ $\pi/2$ right and 3 units up.

Translate as $y=f(x-a)+b$ for horizontal and vertical shifts.

Apply translation vector to each vertex coordinates.

Shifts change vertex position; not the shape of the parabola.

Shift $|x|$ left 2 units and down 3 units.
