Deprivation: loss of attachment; Privation: none formed

Protest, despair, detachment

Several hours or days

Child no longer anticipates mother's return

Child rejects mother, no normal reunion behaviour

Lack affection, no guilt, responsibility or shame

Separation >6 months before age 6

Regular contact, maintain routines, familiar toys/comforters

Emotional withdrawal, loss of appetite, crying
