Desensitisation definition

Making someone less sensitive through repeated exposure

Effect of repeated exposure to violence

Reduces arousal, makes aggressive behaviours more likely

Disinhibition definition

Normal restraints loosened; aggressive behaviour normalised

How computer games cause disinhibition

Reward aggression, creating new norms for the player

Berkowitz & Alioto 1973 finding

Aggression-as-revenge film led to more/longer shocks given

Cognitive priming definition

Aggressive media images act as cues for aggressive behaviour

How cognitive priming leads to aggression

Violent media creates schemas; cues trigger aggression later

Individual differences in media violence effects

Personality affects response; some less influenced than others

Bartholow & Anderson 2002 finding

Violent game players chose higher noise levels vs nonviolent

Gender effect in Bartholow & Anderson study

Men showed a more significant effect than women

Problem with correlational studies on media aggression

Cannot draw causal conclusions from them

Why correlational studies can't prove causation

No manipulated/controlled variables, no random assignment

What correlational studies can/cannot show

Can show relationship, can't prove media causes aggression
