Types of Conformity (OCR A-Level Psychology): Revision Notes
1.1.1 Types of Conformity
Conformity/Majority influence = Yielding to group pressure
This occurs when an individual's behaviour and/or beliefs are influenced by a larger group of people.
Types of conformity:
Compliance (temporary)
Public but not private acceptance of majority influence to gain group approval.
E.g., Publicly claiming to support a certain football team when privately you don't support any.
Identification (temporary)
Public and private acceptance of majority influence to gain group acceptance.
E.g., Starting to smoke because all of your friends do but when you leave those friends you stop smoking.
Internalisation - true conformity (permanent)
Public and private acceptance of majority influence by adapting to the behaviours/beliefs of the majority of the group.
E.g., Being influenced by a group's religious beliefs so much so that you convert to their faith and continue your new religious way of life even without the influence of the group.
