5.5.2 Self-actualisation & Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
ABRAHAM MASLOW
⭐Hierarchy of needs
- The lower in the hierarchy the more powerfully the need is felt
- Lower layers cannot be deficient if the person is going to meet self-actualisation
Carl Rogers
⭐ Rogers (1959) believed that humans have one basic motive, which is the tendency to self-actualize.
To reduce the gap between the self-concept and the ideal self Rogers developed client-centered therapy to help people cope with everyday life. Rogers claimed that many of the issues people experience as adults, such as low self-esteem, can often be explained by a lack of unconditional positive regard from their parents. Therefore, Rogers saw one of his roles as being able to provide his clients with this unconditional positive regard
Congruence: Self-actualization occurs when a person's is congruent with their self-concept and real self.
Self-concept: The self you feel you are
The ideal self: The self you wish to be
The real self: The person you actually are
