What does chromatography do?

Separates mixtures into individual compounds

Purpose of RfR_f value

Identifies chemicals in a mixture

Three key components of chromatography

Analyte, stationary phase, mobile phase

What is the analyte?

The mixture of chemicals to be separated

What is the stationary phase?

Solid material that stays still during experiment

What is the mobile phase?

Liquid or gas that moves through stationary phase

How do strongly attracted chemicals move?

Slowly and travel a shorter distance

How do weakly attracted chemicals move?

Quickly and travel further

Stationary phase in paper chromatography

Chromatography paper

Mobile phase in paper chromatography

Solvent (e.g. water or alcohol)

RfR_f value formula

Rf=chemical distancesolvent distanceR_f = \frac{\text{chemical distance}}{\text{solvent distance}}

Property of RfR_f values under same conditions

Always the same for a specific chemical
