Great Expectations: Plot Summary
Charles Dickens's Great Expectations follows the life of Pip, an orphan raised by his sister and her husband, Joe Gargery, a blacksmith. Pip's life changes when he helps an escaped convict, Magwitch, and later visits the mysterious Miss Havisham, who lives in a decaying mansion. There, he meets and falls in love with her beautiful but cold-hearted ward, Estella. Pip dreams of becoming a gentleman to win Estella's love, and one day, he learns that he has "great expectations" of wealth from an unknown benefactor. Believing Miss Havisham is his benefactor, Pip moves to London, leaving his humble beginnings behind.
As Pip grows into a gentleman, he becomes ashamed of his origins and distances himself from Joe. However, his life takes a turn when he discovers that Magwitch, the convict he once helped, is his true benefactor. Magwitch's return puts Pip's life in danger, but it also leads to a moral awakening. Pip learns the value of loyalty and humility, ultimately reconciling with Joe and returning to his roots. In the end, Pip and Estella meet again, both having grown through their experiences, leaving their future together open to interpretation.
