6.2.9 Applications of EM Waves

Electromagnetic (EM) waves have a wide range of applications in our daily lives and in various fields.
Communication
- Radio Waves: Used for AM and FM radio, as well as TV broadcasts. They help us stay connected with news, music, and entertainment.
- Microwaves: Used in mobile phones, Wi-Fi, and satellite communications. They allow us to talk to each other and access the internet wirelessly.
- Infrared Waves: Used for remote controls, like those for TVs and other gadgets. They help us operate devices without needing to press buttons directly.
Medical
- X-rays: Used to see inside the body for medical diagnoses, such as checking broken bones or finding diseases. X-rays help doctors understand what's happening inside without needing surgery.
- Gamma Rays are used in certain types of cancer treatments to kill cancer cells. They can also be used in medical imaging to get detailed pictures of the inside of the body.
Science and Industry
- Infrared and Microwave Sensors: Used in weather forecasting to study the atmosphere and monitor climate conditions.
- Radio Telescopes: Detect radio waves from space, helping scientists learn about stars, galaxies, and other cosmic phenomena.
Safety and Security
- Radar: Uses radio waves to detect and track objects like planes and cars. It helps with navigation and safety in various transport systems.
- Security Scanners: Use X-rays to scan luggage at airports, helping to ensure that dangerous items are not brought onto planes.
